Osun couple kill, bury children on own farm

A 43-year-old man, identified as Sanjo, and his wife have been handed over to the Osun State Police Command by the Osun State Ministry of Women, Children and Social Affairs, for the killing of their children and burying of same in a shallow grave on their farmland in Osogbo, the state capital.

According to the information made available by Mrs Adereti Bolarinwa, the Press Officer of the Ministry, Osogbo, the ministry moved in on the couple after the matter was reported to the Commissioner, Barrister Olubukola Olaboopo, by a good Samaritan.

Olaboopo while confirming that Sanjo and his wife had been handed over to the police, stated that the arrest was effected by the police with the collaboration of the ministry after it was informed of the man who had been killing his children.

The Commissioner disclosed that the state government will not condone acts of violence, child abuse or any other related act in the state, adding that perpetrators of such evil will not go unpunished.

Olaboopo also explained that the state placed a high premium on the welfare of children in the state and will do everything to ensure their safety.

Meanwhile, the suspect explained that it was his third child and two-month-old baby that he unintentionally beat to death.

According to him, “I got married to my wife in 2008 and God blessed us with five children. It was the third child that I beat, unintentionally to death.

“My wife left the infant baby with me and she started crying. I did all I could to placate her but she kept crying. Something just came upon me and I beat the two-month-old baby to death. I and my wife buried the child on our farmland.”

His wife also confessed that she gave birth to five babies out of which four are dead and the fifth being the newborn.

“We decided to kill two of the babies due to poverty while we dumped the third one around Technical Area, Osogbo,” she explained.

While narrating how she suffered in the hands of her husband, she explained that apart from constantly subjecting her to hard labour on his farm, he was fond of beating and tying her down before sexual intercourse.

She also confessed that on several occasions, she had been compelled to source sexual partners for her husband.

She further revealed that they had made several abortion attempts on the now-dead infant before he was delivered safe and sound.

Several phone calls put across to the Osun State Police Command by reporters to confirm the arrests went unanswered as at the time of filing this report.
